Building your own website with AI in 2026
AI can put a site online in an afternoon. What it does not solve is everything that happens afterwards. The three points that decide build it yourself or hire someone.
A restaurant owner in Marigot wrote to us in September. He had built his own site with an AI assistant, in one evening. It looked good. He only wanted to know why nobody was booking through it. The answer came down to one number: seven seconds to load on an American phone, and a contact form that was sending enquiries into the void.
Can I build my own website with AI?
Yes, and the result can be decent. An AI assistant will now write a presentable page in an afternoon, with reasonable copy and a clean layout. What it does not do on its own is host that page somewhere it loads fast from the United States, wire it into a booking flow that actually works, and keep it alive twelve months later. On these islands, the cost of a website was never in writing the pages.
What AI genuinely does well
Three things, no argument. Marketing copy, as long as you read it back: it knows neither your menu nor your story, but it beats a blank page. First-pass translation. And layout: grids, colours, spacing, it avoids the most obvious design mistakes.
If your current site is a Facebook page or a PDF, an AI-built site is a clear step up. That is worth saying plainly.
The three things that break after launch
Speed. This is the most expensive problem and the least visible one. A shared host in mainland Europe takes 6 to 8 seconds to load from Miami, because the request crosses the Atlantic twice. And past three seconds of waiting, more than half of mobile visitors give up, according to Google's reference study. Your page can be beautiful: nobody sees it. Our sites stay under two seconds, and that is not a question of code but of where the site is served from.
Bookings. An AI-generated form sends an email. If the host blocks outgoing mail, if the address lands in spam, or if nobody checks the inbox on a Sunday, the enquiry vanishes without you ever knowing. It is the most common and the most costly failure, and we gave it a whole article: your contact form is losing enquiries.
Two languages. Two translated versions are not enough. Google has to understand which one to serve to whom, both pages need stable addresses, and the English has to match what people actually type: "St Maarten", not a word-for-word translation of the French. AI produces two texts; it does not produce that plumbing.
When building it yourself is the right call
Let us be honest: there are cases where we would tell you to do it yourself. You are testing an idea and you are not sure you will keep going. You need a presentation page, with no online selling, no bookings, no traffic to go and win. Your budget is zero this quarter. In those three cases, an AI-built site on a domain you own is a sound starting point, and it locks you into nothing.
The condition is the domain. Buy it in your own name, not a platform's: it is the one piece you cannot recover later. The full test is in your domain name may not actually be yours.
And when it stops being the right call
The moment your site has to take payments, fill a calendar, or bring in visitors who have never heard of you, the maths change. What you are paying for then is not page production, it is speed, bookings that complete, and the measurements that tell you what is working.
On the French side, part of that budget can be subsidised: the Collectivité's BOOST scheme covers around 30% of eligible spending, capped at €15,000, provided the application is filed before you sign the quote. The exact conditions and the procedure are on our website funding page. St Barts is not covered: it is a separate Collectivité, outside the European Union.
What gets measured
Three numbers settle this debate without any speeches. Your home page's mobile PageSpeed score. The number of enquiries you receive per month, and how many get an answer in under an hour. And the number of visitors arriving from a search, rather than from your own Instagram.
We never promise a first page on Google. We measure those three numbers before and after, and we show them to you. If an AI-built site already holds them, keep it: we will tell you so.
